This is a five-week course for those who have learned the basic rules of The Chicago Manual of Style (CMOS) and would like to put them into practice and receive feedback on their work. While the WDU Certificate Program begins with the rules of grammar and goes on to teach the basics of CMOS, many students (and anyone familiar with the CMOS rules) can benefit from additional guided practice.

This class is practice-sheet intensive. It begins with a Refresher Lecture. The lecture presents the prevalent Chicago rules with explanations and helpful examples. It is meant to be studied and referred to throughout the duration of the course.

Each week students will copy and paste an assignment into a Word doc (or compatible file) and edit the exercises according to the rules of the CMOS, using the Track Changes tool.

When ready, the student will upload their finished work and submit it. The instructor will make corrections and write explanations in the Comments blurbs before sending the sheet back to the student via email.

Kim’s editing career began in 1989 at a small newspaper in northern New Jersey, where she learned hands-on the process of editing, article writing, layout, and publishing. She also worked for two book-publishing companies—one of the big five in New York City and another smaller publishing house in New Jersey—where she took nonfiction titles from raw manuscript to finished product. After several years on the job, she decided to freelance.

Kim received her B.A. in English from Skidmore College and continued her education at the New York Summer Writers Institute and the Emerson College writing and publishing graduate program. She is an accomplished writer who has published articles in national magazines, such as Better Homes and Gardens and Woman’s Day, and newspapers.
